TIME
CENTER SPONSORS LEAN SUMMER WORKSHOP FOR EDUCATORS
“I
am better able to connect problem-solving and teamwork
to real world applications. I will now be able to redirect
lessons plans and units to point students to local industries.”
“The
workshop allows me to expose my students to manufacturing
as a possible career choice because I know what is out there
and have contacts for more information.”
These are but two of the many comments made by the 16 educators
who attended the TIME Center sponsored Lean Manufacturing Summer
Workshop for Educators. The four-day workshop provided information
on the skills and knowledge required in modern manufacturing,
reinforced through hands-on exercises and a tour of GM Powertrain,
Baltimore Transmission. The four days culminated with teachers
developing lesson plans and exercises around specific lean applications.
The 16 educators, representing 13 different middle and high
schools from seven Maryland counties, included manufacturing
and technical education instructors as well as instructors in
the core disciplines of science, physics, chemistry and pre-engineering.
The TIME Center is a National Science Foundation funded Advanced
Technology Education Center that, through its educational and
business partners, is charged with developing initiatives that
meet the education needs of Maryland’s manufacturers
and improving the industry image. One such initiative is to
provide
professional development opportunities for teachers to update
their instructional programs.
RMI congratulates the TIME Center, the Maryland Technical Extension
Service and GM Powertrain, Baltimore Transmission for making
the workshop such a success.

NEW
REALITY MEANS U.S. MANUFACTURERS MUST BE INNOVATIVE
- OR PERISH
The
media frenzy about loss of jobs and outsourcing has
painted a bleak picture of U.S. manufacturing for
the general public. Yet, the United States remains
the world's largest exporter of manufactured goods.
But although the country holds this leadership in
manufacturing, by no means is that position safe.
Globalization has made the world smaller; in one
sense, it has erased borders. Technology transfer
has enabled countries in Asia and Eastern Europe
to compete vigorously with the United State for the
world's manufacturing pie.

Keep Industrial Jobs in America
U.S. House Small Business Committee Chairman Don
Manzullo (R-IL) today organized more than two dozen of his House
colleagues into a special caucus to preserve manufacturing jobs
in America.
The Congressional Manufacturing Caucus, headed by Manzullo
and co-chair Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH), was called to order for
the first time Thursday morning and immediately went to work
discussing ways to preserve U.S. manufacturing jobs. The United
States has lost more than 2.6 million manufacturing jobs the
past three years.
"We are hemorrhaging manufacturing jobs in this country,
and not enough of our political leaders understand the ramifications
of losing our industrial base," Manzullo said. "We
formed this caucus to not only educate Washington on the importance
of manufacturing in America but to enact policies to stem the
job loss and put our people back to work."
