A Critical Online Resource for Maryland Manufacturing

Overview of Maryland Manufacturing

The Economic Power of Manufacturing

Manufacturing in Maryland represents a substantial and growing element of the overall Maryland economy. In 2002, there were more than 168,000 Maryland manufacturing jobs – representing about 7.2% of all private sector jobs. This percentage is well below the national average of 13.4% - leaving substantial room to generate additional manufacturing jobs and economic growth in Maryland.

While Maryland has participated in many traditional types of manufacturing, it is also at the center of some of the most high technology manufacturing in the country – if not the world.

Support for National Defense and Homeland Security

Maryland is home to organizations like the National Security Agency, the Naval Surface Weapons Centers, NASA Goddard Spaceflight Center, multiple military bases (Pax River, Aberdeen, Naval bases at Carderock and Indian Head), as well as many traditional manufacturing institutions (e.g. ISG Bethlehem Steel).

Recent world events have intorduced many new and important challenges for the country. As home to multiple military bases and technology centers, Maryland is positioned to meet these challenges and directly support our country’s national defense and Homeland Security needs.

"We’ve got the future of anti-terrorism anti-cybersecurity software going on...We’re well positioned to lead in science and technology, manufacturing, engineering, test development across the spectrum."

“Maryland’s advantage is the application of leading edge technology and world class processes for manufacturing activities.”

“Whether you’re producing Labels, or cans or cars or proteins or software or modifying genes – you need to be at the world class level.”

Maryland DBED Secretary Aris Mellisaratos - 5/15/03

Many Challenges Ahead

While Maryland is a critical and successful force in Manufacturing, many challenges still remain. These include:

  • Overall competition – foreign and local
  • The ability to attract and retain qualified labor
  • Creative ways to deal with rising operating costs
  • Accessible and effective training
  • An outdated image of manufacturing – which fails to emphasize many modern aspects of the current manufacturing environment.

The Role of the Regional Manufacturing Institute

The role of the Regional Manufacturing Institute is to help manufacturers in Maryland overcome these (and other) challenges, help companies achieve and maintain world class processes and technologies, and provide necessary networking and communication between industry and government to achieve these goals.

The modernized RMI web site (marylandmanufacturing.info) is just one step in this process. RMI’s goal is to make this web site the most important resource available in manufacturing today.
